The Innovator's Prescription

Introduction to my distribution list encouraing the readino of Innovator's Prescription

Attached is my outline of the introduction to The Innovator’s Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care By Clayton M. Christensen. This is a logical outline in the author’s words. In that it is the “introduction” with the discussion of vocabulary and basis insights, it is denser than the outline of the remainder of the book will be. It preserves, hopefully, the content and intent of the author.

Normally, when I chose to outline a book which promises to be a seminal contribution to a field (probably eight such books in my life, the last two were Peter Senge’s The Fifth Discipline and Tom Morris’ If Aristotle Ran General Motors), I would not release it until I had completed the outline of the entire book. However, I have chosen to distribute this fourteen page outline of the thirty-six page introduction to this book because it is of such import, in my opinion that I would hope that this introduction will stimulate you to read and absorb this book.

Some things in this book may alarm and possibly offend physicians and even medical educators. However, we will ignore its message and solution at our own peril. In the past, I have addressed the issues of realities, responsibilities and rights.” The punch line is that if we want the “right” to lead healthcare, we must face the “new realities” and accept the “responsibilities” which these realities impose upon us, no matter how objectionable we may think the “realities” are.

This work addresses an emerging reality which imposes upon us new responsibilities. We can object to or reject these realities but if we wish to retain the right to lead healthcare we must deal with them. This book has a message for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, hospitals and hospital administrators, health plans and insurance companies, medical educations, the medical IT industry, as well as for the United States Government and CMS.

The book is well written and a “good read.” I hope you find it as engaging as I have.
